My joy lies in working with students. I teach introductory levels of Spanish. I constantly seek to improve my practice and build stronger relationships with the students in my care.

Education

In August 2016, I earned my PhD in Education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. My studies focused on Second Language Acquisition and Instructional Technology. In May 2011, I completed my EdS in Higher Education from Appalachian State University. I also earned my MA in Romance Languages - Spanish and my BA in Spanish with a minor in Teaching English as a Second Language from Appalachian State Universy in 2008 and 2007 respectively. I am passionate about studying ways to infuse culture into the world language curriculum in authentic and meaningful ways. I am also quite adept at utilizing instructional technology to support student learning.

Employment

In August 2019, I started my career at Emory & Henry College teaching Spanish. Here I have found a professional home with warm and supportive colleagues and the most wonderful students in the world. I have helped to start an American Sign Language club and stepped in to support the Spanish Honor Society, Sigma Delta Pi. In the summer of 2020, I worked to synthesize information from various courses and webinars to help my department prepare for remote teaching in the 2020-2021 school year. I am currently working on research into LinguaFolio® use in Virginia and I'm always working toward my big goal of developing an open-source online introductory Spanish curriculum based on my research into intercultural communication and goal-based learning to promote lifelong, autonomous continuation of language study beyond the classroom and the traditional school experience.
